Drama, drama, and more drama.
Does teen counseling make sense?
The teenage years can be a very turbulent and chaotic time for both teens and their parents. A teen’s thoughts are often all over the place. Mood swings and misunderstandings between teens and their parents are common occurrences. Sometimes, teens experience mental health issues that can really impact their overall happiness and daily functioning. When this happens, teen counseling can really help.
Common Reasons Teens Go to Counseling:
- Anxiety including social anxiety
- Depression
- Low Self Esteem
- Worry
- Fatigue
- Lack of interest in activities that they once enjoyed
- Physical symptoms like headaches, stomachaches, and body aches.
- Peer Pressure
- Pressure from Social Media
- Attention issues in school
- Relationship conflicts
- Conflict at home with parents and siblings
Why are teens hesitant to go to counseling?
If you’re a teen, there are several reasons you may not want to go to counseling. You might think it is lame and that other people will find out or make fun of you. But, counseling is confidential. Your teen therapist cannot tell anyone you are seeing them without your permission. The exception to this is your parents. They will need to sign consent paperwork for treatment. But don’t worry, what you tell your counselor is kept between the two of you unless it is an issue of safety. If your therapist worries that you are a threat to yourself or others and pose a safety risk, then they are legally obligated to tell your parents and take appropriate action. We know that your parents may want to know what’s going on but, your therapist will them to respect your privacy so you can feel comfortable being honest.
“Are you going to make me talk about it?”
Another reason that you may not want to go to counseling is you don’t know what to talk about. Our teen therapists are experts in helping you find things to talk about. This doesn’t have to include talking about feelings (that’s another reason teens don’t want to go to therapy). Often, you find that when you talk about things that matter to you, then they can help you solve any problems that come up.
What to Expect From Teen Counseling in Greenwood, IN
Your first session will consist of your counselor asking a lot of questions about yourself. At this time, they will be completing an intake to learn more about you. So this means they’ll probably want to talk to you, your parents, and you and your parents together. This is important because it helps your counselor see the interaction between you and your parents.
The Renewed Hope Approach to Teen Counseling
There is no single therapy technique we use in teen counseling, our teen therapists take an individualized and unique approach to every session. They will work with you to develop the best plan to address the problems you are facing. This will be done in a nonjudgmental environment so you can feel free to be honest and to talk about whatever it is you need to talk about. Each counseling session may look different. Your counselor may use games, movement, or jokes to start discussions. Often, teens like you may feel powerless or not in control of their life. Counseling gives you the opportunity to have a person who is just for you to talk to and feel heard.
