EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) Certification and Consultations for Professionals
According to EMDRIA (EMDR International Association), EMDR is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method. It is proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders. It is an eight-phase protocol that is worked at the client’s pace. These phases include history taking, grounding and resourcing, activating the memory, desensitizing the negative belief and negative experience, installing a positive belief, acknowledging body sensations, closure, and re-evaluating.
Emily Lee is an approved consultant with EMDRIA. She is also the founder of Renewed Hope Counseling Services in Greenwood, IN. Emily has experience in trauma and PTSD, including complex trauma, attachment trauma, and birth trauma. She has seen EMDR be successful in helping many clients.
She has successfully used EMDR with clients who have experienced the following:
- PTSD
- Anxiety
- Phobias
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Complex grief and loss
- Issues surrounding infertility and pregnancy/infant loss
- Attachment disorders.
Why should I become a certified EMDR clinician?
You do not need to be certified to practice EMDR. However, it is helpful to become certified. EMDR is a robust protocol that can help many overcome mental health disorders, especially trauma. Often complex trauma presents in various ways. So, it is helpful to go deeper into EMDR to gain experience in the ins and outs of the protocol. There are also many different types of protocols to learn outside the basic protocol.
Certification also gives you credibility in the field of EMDR. For Emily, certification was pursued because it is difficult to implement a new way of doing therapy. She didn’t want to fall back into her “old way” of therapy and end up not using EMDR. Becoming certified was a way for her to grow confident in my skills as an EMDR clinician.
To become a certified EMDR clinitian you must:
• Be Independently Licensed
• Have received 20 hours of consultation by an EMDRIA approved consultant
• Completed an EMDRIA approved training course
• Conduct at least 50 hours of EMDR session with at least 25 different clients
• Obtain 2 letters of recommendation
• Obtain a letter of recommendation from Approved Consultant who provided consultation hours
*You can find more about becoming certified or other training at www.emdria.org
EMDR Certification Hours
Certification hours can be done in individual sessions or group sessions. No more than 10 hours of certification or 20 consultation hours can be done in a group session. Group consultations take place in groups of three. Occasionally, there will be enough consultees at a time to create a group.
Certification hours can only start once you have completed your EMDR basic training. This means that the consultation hours you receive as part of your basic training cannot be counted towards certification. Nor can you start certification specific hours until you have completed all the hours for the basic training.
The process to start certification with EMDR therapist Emily Lee is to contact her via the form on this site or email her at info@renewedhope-counseling.com.
